13. The Flood; follow God’s instruction for salvation (Gen 7:1-24)

The flood came as the Lord had foretold.

Read Gen 7:1-24(NET) or Gen 7:1-24 (ESV)

Find verses stating that they did as God had commanded. (three)

We can see God’s initiative in the flood judgment. He called Noah and explained the plan of flooding the earth and building of an ark. Also, at each moment of the flood, God directed Noah specifically. (            ) days before the flood, God commanded Noah to enter the ark and take (           ) pairs of clean animals and (          ) pairs of unclean animals. (v1-4) The animals came into the ark just as God (                 ) him. (v7-9) Then the Lord (          ) him in. (v16) Rain fell on the earth (          ) days and nights. (v12) The waters completely inundated the earth, which is the opposite of Gen 1:9, so that all (             ) things that moved on the earth died. Only Noah and those who were with him in (           ) survived. (v21-23)

Meditation for Application

Structure: Today's passage can be divided into three parts. They seem repetitive, but each has its own focus.

6:22-7:10: God explained his plan and commanded Noah, and Noah obeyed. keywords: "commanded," "Noah did"

7:11-16: Flood came exactly as God had said. Keywords: 'on that day,' the date.

7:17-24: Waters covered the earth, and all died except Noah and those in the ark. Keywords: 'waters', 'all'

Destruction by Creator: God destroyed all that he had made. Destruction was the opposite action of creation. God had prepared the dry land in Gen 1:9, but now, He made water cover the whole earth. He had the right to do so for He had created.

Also, this destruction alludes to another kind of creation. As God had created every creature of its kind, He commanded to take every creature of its kind into the ark. And Noah is the agent of this task.

As the Lord had said: Flood came on that day. People had not seen such a flood and expected it would come suddenly without a pre-sign. "burst open" "floodgates were opened" The flood flooded just as a huge dam bursted.

The date of the flood was given to Noah. Noah must have been very busy preparing food and arranging everything for that seven days.

Destruction and Salvation: People might doubt, "How could God destroy all living things?" But God did! Do not take God's warnings in the Bible lightly.

People might doubt, "How could I survive if such a disaster (economic recession or global perscution of the last days) comes?" God will provide a way of life!

This is God's judgment. For someone, it will be the day of judgment. For someone, it will be the day of salvation. Both groups will experience God's miraculous power but in different directions.
