16. New Start and New Covenant (Gen 9:1-17)

INTRO:  After the flood, God gave the blessing of a new start to those who came out of the ark, giving them new commands and a new covenant. The text is thus divided into three parts: blessing, command, and covenant.

Guided Observations

Compared to Genesis 1:30, what has been changed in verse 3?

The old food code was not eating the fruit of knowledge of good and evil. What is the new food code? (v4)

What is God’s covenant to Noah and his descendants? (v11)

(                   ) was given to them as a confirming sign of God’s promise. Whenever they see it in the clouds, they need to trust God’s promise.

As we see the cross, we should believe God’s promise of (                 ) of sins.

Meditation for Application

God instituted a law: do not murder. God didn't execute Cain for his killing his brother. But now, He announced capital punishment for murder. In Israel's history, whenever a new behavior of sin came out from their sinful hearts, the Lord added a new regulation or command and clarified the new behavior was sinful.

In ancient theology, an image of a god implied the presence of the god. Therefore, you could not kill a man without despising God whose image was on that man.

Rainbow covenant: Trust God's promise, not your experience. Verses 12-17 speak again and again about the sign of the promise, the rainbow. Whenever it started raining, they feared the flood. Because the flood had happened in the past, it would likely happen again. But, they should trust God and stop worrying.

Believe God's promise of daily provision and stop worrying.

God didn't want them to live in fear. God didn't threaten them with flood judgment. God is not the one who drives us in the way of intimidation. Then we shouldn't treat others in a threatening way either.
