Answers & Meditation

Shechem, disgrace

The Bible says this incident was a disgrace to Israel. In their culture, marriage was an important affair between two families. Raping a girl from another tribe was humiliating the whole tribe.

Jacob experienced disgrace in Shechem. He should have gone to Bethel first after his return from Paddan Aram.

Not seeking God’s presence might lead us to a life of disgrace.

Deceitfully, one, circumcised

Jacob’s family was chosen by God and shouldn’t become one people with another tribe, especially a Canaanite tribe. Circumcision was the sign of the Lord’s chosen people. Now, they used the sign of the blessing for the hook of annihilation.

Simeon, Levi, looted

If this was to revenge Shechem for his rape of Dinnah, they should not have killed others nor looted the city.

me, I, my

Jacob only cared about himself. Selfishness is the root of favoritism.
