82. Jacob’s burial in Canaan (Gen 50:1-14)

Jacob died in Egypt without seeing God’s promise of the land fulfilled. But he believed it and asked his body to be buried in Canaan.

The passage shows Jacob’s burial was like a national funeral. All Pharaoh’s officials accompanied the funeral trip to Canaan. The whole of Egypt mourned Jacob’s death.


It was Jacob’s will to bury him in Canaan

Joseph was in charge of all processes of the funeral. Interestingly, Joseph sent a messenger to Pharaoh instead of asking the permission in person. Joseph is portrayed on the same level as Pharaoh. 


Machpelah, had instructed

Though Jacob died in Egypt, he believed the Lord would give them Canaan in the future.
