04. Who am I? I will be with you (Ex 3:11-22)

Though the plan of deliverance was announced, Moses didn’t praise God. Rather, he doubted its feasibility because he focused on his ability.

πŸ‘‰ Read Exodus 3:11-22

When Moses heard the Lord’s plan, he said, “(                  ) that I should go to Pharaoh?” God replied, “Surely (                    ).”

At this, Moses asked God for His name. What are the two names that God revealed himself in front of Moses? (14, 15)

God asked Moses to tell the elders about God’s plan of deliverance from their (             ) and to deliver God’s message to Pharaoh (verses                ).  God told them Pharaoh would not listen to them until He struck him with mighty hands. (verses         ). Also, they will get valuable items from Egyptians as if they (             ) Egypt. (verses            ).

Answers and Meditation

Who am I, I will be with you

God didn’t say anything about who Moses was. He didn’t encourage Moses, saying, ‘you are the more suitable to lead my people than anyone else.’ Instead, He confirmed, ‘I will be with you.’ Moses’ ability doesn’t matter if the Lord is with him.

When you despair or are discouraged, you must be looking at human resources, including yourself.

I AM, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob

We cannot comprehend his name and his attribute in full. He is transcendent. But He wants to be called the God of a human. These two names reveal God’s unique and paradoxical attributes: transcendent and intimate.

Note that God didn't say, 'the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.' He called Himself the God of each one of them.

Affliction, 16-18, 19-20, plunder, 21-22

In the exodus narrative, these three things will repeat again and again.

1) The reason for the exodus is to worship the Lord.

2) Pharaoh’s refusal will bring about the revelation of who God is through wonders.

3) They will plunder the Egyptians, which means the victory of God and His people over Pharaoh, who represents the Egyptian gods, and the Egyptians.

The sign that I sent you: worshiping in this mountain. (12) The sign will be confirmed in the future. For today, walk forward in faith.

This passage shows three names of God.

1) God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (verse 6). God revealed this name by himself at the beginning.

2) I AM (verse 15). God revealed this name when Moses asked for His name. It means that we humans cannot comprehend God's objective and absolute name. Instead, God confirmed again the God of Abraham as His name.

3) the God of Hebrews (verse 18). God used this name before Pharaoh. ‘Hebrews’ was used to mean people of aliens, sojourners, the lower, and the oppressed.

These two names show God’s attributes. The name 'the God of Abraham' means His faithfulness to the Abrahamic covenant. 'The God of Hebrews' is used to mean His mercy for the oppressed.
