18. It is the LORD's Passover (Ex 12:1-28)

The Lord wants them to remember how they were delivered.

πŸ‘‰ Read Exodus 12:1-28

They took (         ) year old male lamb or goat for the Passover on the (         ) day of the month. They kept it until (          ) day. On the 14th day sundown, they killed the lamb and put its (            ) on the doorposts and the doorframe. They should not boil it, but (             ) it. They ate the meat in the night in haste.

What was the sign that made the angel pass over the house?

What is the name of the feast that continued after the Passover?

Why do they keep the feast of the Passover as their perpetual ordinance?

Answers and Meditation

One, 10th, 14th, blood, roast

God told them a very specific instruction. They chose a lamb on the 10th and killed on the 14th. For four days, they checked if the lamb was without blemish.

In the Jewish calendar, a new day starts at sundown.

“It is the LORD’s Passover.” That night was the night that the Israelites were delivered from death and slavery. The Lord will skip the house that has blood on its door. It was the night of destruction and redemption. And as the Lord saw the blood, He would have seen His Son on the cross in the far future.

The Lord meant this. ‘Tonight is very special to me, more than it is to you. The meal is not only to energize your body before departure for a long journey. It foreshadows how my Son will give his body as the True Bread for you to have eternal life. The Passover reminds me of sacrifice of My loving Son to forgive sinners. It is very special and meaningful for Me. Though you might not fully grasp what I have planned for you, just follow my instructions for now. It is My Passover, more so than the day of your deliverance.’

Blood

Verse 12 emphasizes that all are subject to God’s judgment. No exception. Only the blood saves us from God’s universal judgment.

Blood on the door implies that death has already come to this house.

The Feast of Unleavened Bread

Verses 14 – 20 repeatedly say that they should eat bread without yeast. In other words, they should not eat any bread with yeast. Anyone who violates this will be cut off from the Israelites (15, 19)

Eating the unleavened bread would imply the urgency of exodus on that night. (39)

To remember how the Lord struck Egypt and delivered their households.

It was to make the Israelites remember how the Lord delivered them from the land of slavery. Far later, after the nation fell by Babylon, they started yearning for another salvation, like the exodus, from colonial oppression and hardships.

The Lord’s establishing the Passover Feast alludes that He will deliver His people again in a similar way, for the Lord is not changing.

On Passover night, salvation comes according to each house and family. A family that stayed in a house with blood was saved. We have joined the family of God in the house with Jesus’ blood. Thus, our salvation is secured.
