Answers and Meditation

Midnight, all, Egypt, the night, great cry, the night

Verses 29-32 describe how desperately Pharaoh begs them to leave. Pharaoh called Moses in the night. It was so an urgent request. ‘Leave right now and bless me.’

This is a typical response of a wicked, sinful man when God reveals His great power. His submission was not obedience to God but a way out from death. His submission was conditional, asking for blessing, and without admitting his sins.

If God intends it, it will happen. Nothing can block God. Pharaoh’s holding Israel was not because the previous plagues were not strong enough but because God wanted to reveal who He was.

Favor, plundered

The Exodus was the victory of God’s people over Pharaoh’s people.

They didn’t have time

They were a huge group of people. They took the treasures of Egypt with them as the torrent swept through.

Vigil, night, the vigil

God kept His promise of deliverance on this night. Until they all got out Egypt, God watched over them. Therefore, the Israelites should keep the Passover night awake.

Interestingly, salvation happened at night. And they were supposed to be awake because they had been told to leave that night. This is like Jesus’ teaching, ‘be on alert.’

Keeping the Passover, circumcision

Joining the Passover tells if one belongs to the Israelite community, the people of God. (43-47)

Foreigners were not allowed unless they were circumcised (48-49).

The Israelite community was exclusive but accepted anyone who wanted to join.
