Regulation for the sin offering is complicated. The
presiding priest should eat the sin offering. If he doesn’t eat it, he violates
the law. From the grain offering, the remaining was given to the priests as a gift from God.
The priest’s eating the sin offering (Hatah: sin offering or sin)was to identify himself
with the sacrificed animal. Thus, the priest bears the sin of the offeror.
The sin offering for the priest or the whole congregation,
its blood was sprinkled before the curtain in the Holy Place. See Chapter 4. Sin offering for common people (Lev 4)
The atonement of sin for the people relied on the priest. Now, the priests were human, not perfect. The atonement of the priests’ sins was open-ended to the perfect atonement that God would prepare.
The priesthood and sacrifice system will be made complete by
the sacrifice of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. The Book of Hebrews explains
this.
