14. Death of the priests (Nadab and Abihu) (Lev 10:1-20)

The glorious inauguration was followed by the tragic death of the chosen priests. Thus, the Lord gave them more warnings.

πŸ‘‰ Read Leviticus 10:1-20

Nadab and Abihu were killed when they presented (             ) fire before the Lord. It was because they did not (           ) the Lord. (1-3)

What rule was made after their death?

Why did Moses become angry at Eleazar and Ithamar?

What was Aaron’s excuse for not eating the meat?

Answers and Meditation

Strange, honor

The bible didn’t say ‘bad’ or ‘evil’ fire. Only because they didn’t follow the Lord’s commands. No matter how good it looks in the viewpoint of this world, if it is not according to His commands, God doesn’t accept it.

Some might say that the Lord was too harsh. But, the Lord’s punishment was not merely because they made a mistake. It was on purpose. They did not honor the Lord as much as they should have.

Do not drink when the priests enter the Meeting Tent

The reason is to keep their minds clear and sober so that they could distinguish the holy and the common.

This could be the same reason that we abstain from alcohol.

Verses 12-15, after the death of Nadab and Abihu, Moses instructed Aaron and his other sons ("Eleazar and Ithamar") to finish eating the rest of their portion of the sacrifices they had offered(9:15) for the nation.

Not eating the male goat of sin offering

The presiding priest(s) was(were) supposed to eat the sin offering if its blood was not taken into the Holy Place. However, they didn’t eat it.

Eating the sin offering in this situation would not please the Lord.

Aaron admitted he was guilty of his son’s death.  At least that day, he was not qualified as a high priest.

Moses was satisfied with his answer. Though Aaron didn’t follow the regulation of sin offering, the Lord saw his intention to honor the Lord and accepted his excuse.
