27. Eating Blood Was Forbidden (Lev 17:1-16)

The second major division of Leviticus (Ch 17-27) deals with how the Israelites were to express their worship of Yahweh in their private lives.

πŸ‘‰ Read Leviticus 17:1-16

When they slaughter an ox, lamb, or goat, they need to bring it to the Tabernacle and make it a peace offering to the Lord. Here are two reasons. They will be (          ) for the bloodshed if they don’t offer it to the Lord. Also, it is to prevent their worshipping (            ). (3-4, 7-9)

You should not eat the blood because the (        ) of every living thing is its blood. And the blood should be used to make (                ) for your life, who had taken the life.

When they caught and killed a wild animal edible, what did they do with the blood?

Answers and Meditation

Guilty, the goat demon

Killing an animal. They worshiped the goat demon or something else. Ex) They did some religious rituals to soothe the animal's spirits. This is forbidden.

Life, atonement

Poured out its blood and covered it with soil

By this statute, they should confess their life belongs to the Lord.

Interestingly, anyone who sheds blood will be accountable for taking its/his/her life. Therefore, they should make atonement for it by offering the blood to the Lord, the owner of the life.

In contrast to the first sixteen chapters, chapter 17 says very little about the role of the priests. The emphasis is rather on mistakes the ordinary Israelites could make that would affect their relationship with God. Food and sacrificial meals were a prominent part of heathen worship. Therefore what the Israelites ate and how they ate it demonstrated their consecration to Yahweh.
