28. Holiness in the Marriage Relationship (Lev 18:1-29)

The Lord warned them not to follow the marriage culture of the other nations.

πŸ‘‰ Read Leviticus 18:1-29

“I am the Lord (          ) God! You must not to as (            ) do. You must observe (       ) regulations. I am (             ) your God.”

Jacob married Leah and her sister Rachel. What verse forbids this?

Do not (          ) yourselves with any of these things. Or, the land will become (            ) and will (           ) you out. To protect the whole congregation, anyone who does an act of (                ) will be cut off from the people.

How many times does the Lord say, “I am the Lord”?

Answers and Meditation

Your, they, my, the Lord

The Lord repeatedly says ‘I am the Lord your God.” They should follow none other nations: Egypt or Canaan (verse 3). They should follow the Lord’s statutes (verses 4-5). The Lord emphasizes it again and again.

We should not follow the culture and ways of the world without thought.

Verse 18

The sibling rivalry between Leah and Rachel caused many troubles in Jacob’s family.

Such adulterous behaviors in verses 6 – 23 were pervasive in the ancient world then.

Verse 21 probably prohibits parents from giving their children training as temple prostitutes. Verse 22 prohibits homosexuality.

Defile, unclean, vomit, abomination

Such acts are defiling, lewd, detestable, and abominable. They don’t harm others but defile themselves. Such behaviors will profane the name of their God.

Six times: 2, 4, 5, 6, 21, 29

A certain act of ours might not harm others. However, it could offend God’s reputation. Therefore, we should be holy, not merely moral.
