Five shekels was the redemption price for a boy from one month up to five years old, according to Lev 27.
The Levites were chosen from Israel to redeem the firstborn
of Israel and became God’s possession. That means they were not supposed to
live for themselves but for God.
In chapter 4, the Lord commanded them to count the Levites
from 30 to 50 years old for actual ministry. But, here, they counted all the
Levite men from a month old and above, regardless of age.
Not only those who were on active duty but also those who were not and their families were considered God’s chosen mediators for
His people. So thus, they camped nearby the Tabernacle.
Note that God wanted the Levites to be His possession to work
at the tent of meeting. God only accepts the worship of His own people. He accepts not merely their offering and sacrifices but, more importantly, their lives and whole beings.
When you fully dedicate and surrender your life to the Lord,
He accepts your offering and worship. He owns everything and doesn’t
need anything from you but your heart which is confirmed by wholehearted commitment.
