Aaron and his sons (priests) were responsible for managing the works of the Levites.

The passage of verses 34-49 repeatedly emphasizes ‘the number.’ As the Israelites were numbered God’s soldiers, the Levites were numbered as the soldiers of the priesthood.

When they were numbered, they were enlisted as for a certain duty of God.

The Levites were assigned to this special task according to the Lord’s commands. And the Lord’s commands came through Moses.

Remember that the Levites were given to the priests to support them. They are like hired workers or soldiers of the priests. They were to protect the priesthood sacred from common Israelites.

But, later in chapter 16, Korah from the Kohathite clan of the Levites rebelled against Aaron. Which is against his task assigned by God. He has been assigned to protect the priesthood but tries to destroy it. Therefore, Korah's rebellion was not against Aaron but against God.
