09: The Covenantal Principle: Love and Obey (Deut 6:1 – 25)

Moses emphasized obedience in chapter 5. Now, in chapters 6 – 11, he exposits the principles and theology of the covenant.

πŸ‘‰ Read Deuteronomy 6:1 - 25

The purpose of giving them the Lord’s statutes is (1) to (             ) the Lord and thus obey Him and (2) to live (            ) throughout generations in the land.

This is the essence of the Covenant principle. “The Lord is (           ) God, the Lord is (           ). You must (           ) the Lord your God with your (            ) mind, your (           ) being, and all your strength.”

Verses 6 – 25 tell us what is and how to love God wholeheartedly.

  • You should keep (             ) in your mind by teaching, talking, and meditating them always (verses    ~        ).
  • You must (              ) and serve Him only, even when you get rich (verses        ~       ).
  • Do whatever is proper and good before (            ) on top of your obedience to His statutes. (verses     ~      ).
  • Remember His salvation and trust His good intention (verses       ~       )

Revere, well

When Moses calls for obedience to God’s words, he keeps saying two points. Revere the Lord. Know His good intentions for your well-being.

Your, one, love, whole, whole

What the Lord wants is love, not mechanical following of the rules.

The Lord’s words, 6 ~ 9

You cannot follow and love Him unless you have His words in your heart, not your brain.

Revere, 10 ~ 15

Revere, love, jealous. Note the expressions that emphasize the heart's importance, not merely the acts.

The Lord, 16 ~ 19

The statutes and commands are the mandated written codes for their behaviors. The written codes cannot dictate every detail of your life. They help you understand what God wants from your daily life. On that understanding of God, you should try to do right and proper things in the eyes of God, even though God didn't dictate it specifically.

20 ~ 25

We can trust God's good intentions in Christian suffering by remembering our salvation on the cross.

We can say this way. Keeping His commandments helps you remember His salvific grace and wonder and ensures your right standing before the Lord.
