10: Dispossess the Canaanites in the Land: They were not chosen (Deut 7:1 – 11)

The covenantal principles (Ch 6) are followed by three warnings: the Canaanites (Ch 7), the money (Ch 8), and the pride (Ch 9). In chapter 7, the Lord wanted to eliminate all the Canaanites who didn’t belong to the covenantal relationship in the land.

πŸ‘‰ Read Deuteronomy 7:1 - 11

The Lord commanded them to (              ) the Canaanites who were stronger than them, not to make (            ), nor to (            ) with them. Otherwise, you will turn your (         ) to worship other gods. Then, the anger of the Lord will erupt against (        ), for you are chosen to be (               ).

Why did the Lord choose Israel, who was weak and small?

Realize that the Lord your God is the (         ) God. He keeps the covenant faithfully with those who (       ) him and pays back those who (       ) him.

Answers and Meditation

Annihilate, treaty, intermarry.

Note the increasing relationship with them.

The more involved with the Canaanites, the more difficult it is for the Israelites to refuse not to get their influence.

son, you, his people

His people: In Hebrew, segula (Χ‘ְΧ’ֻלָּΧ”) means ‘personal property’ or ‘special treasure.’ Anything that contaminates his treasure people will the Lord destroy.

God’s Love for this generation and faithfulness to their ancestors.

Such deliverance was not from Israel at all. From God.

It was God’s great power that delivered them from the power of Egyptian slavery. Not by their power.

Therefore, God had a plan when He had delivered them from Egypt. He wants to establish the Kingdom of God in the land of Canaan. The Israelites were chosen for this great plan of God.

True

Who is the true God? He is powerful, faithful, and merciful. He takes the initiative in His works, not contingent on human deeds.

Love

Nevertheless, our God loved His bride who ran away from Him and gave His life for her. He became even more faithful than He had said.

Hate

The land of Canaan was the place where the Lord will reveal His kingdom through His people. That’s why the existence of the Canaanites who don’t submit to God’s reign will hinder God’s plan.

You are the special treasure for His kingdom. Your life will reveal the invisible God visible in the world. It is your duty. Keep yourself pure from anything that doesn't belong to the Lord.
