25: ‘Tell us plainly’ vs ‘The Father and I are one.’ (John 10:22 – 42)

As Jesus announced the Father and Jesus were one, the Jewish leaders tried to stone him.

👉 Read John 10:22 - 42

Q1. Why did the Jewish leaders not believe in Jesus?

They refused to believe in Jesus, for they were not Jesus’ sheep.

‘you refused to believe.’ This tells their willing refusal.

Note that Jesus Himself doesn’t call Himself the Messiah. Instead, He called Himself the One sent from God. He focused on doing the Father’s works and proclaiming His words. From Jesus’ works, they could have concluded that He was the Messiah sent from God. But they refused to admit it. Instead, they asked Jesus to admit His identity as the Messiah plainly, which Jesus wouldn’t do.

Q2. They asked Jesus if He were the (           ). But Jesus claimed that the (          ) and He are one. Because of this, they condemned Him of (             ) and tried to stone Him.

They asked Jesus if He were the ( Christ ). But Jesus claimed that the ( Father  ) and He are one. Because of this, they condemned Him of ( blasphemy ) and tried to stone Him.

If Jesus had acknowledged He was Christ, they would not have been that hostile to Him. They had expected Christ to be a man anointed by God. But Jesus proclaimed that He was more than Christ; He was so intimate with God as He was God. They could not imagine that God could come down and be born as a human. The grace of God of the incarnation was too great for them to call it blasphemy. When you downsize God’s love, you will assault God’s kingdom.

Jesus claimed to be doing God's work and performed many miraculous healings. If Jesus were lying, would God not punish Him rather than allow miracles? Thus, Jesus’ deeds prove His claims.

When God's name is blasphemed, He would defend Himself and doesn’t need human advocates. When we say something on God’s behalf, we should be careful not to speak out while God is silent.

Q3. What is Jesus’ rationale for claiming that ‘I am in the Father and the Father is in me’?

Jesus’ deeds show that the Father is in Jesus.

You are divine if you do God’s works by the Holy Spirit. Be amazed and praise the Lord for the privilege of being called the temple of God. God delights in taking residence in our hearts.

When the Spirit of God works in us, we can do greater things than Jesus (John 14:12). We must acknowledge and behave appropriately as God’s children, divine beings.

Q4. When they saw everything John had said about Jesus was true, they believed Jesus. Faith is to believe the message even without seeing (                 ). (41)

Q5. What is the Father’s works that Jesus did and confirms that the Father was in Jesus? (10, 11, 14–18, 28-30, 37, hint: 11:40-42)

To give us life. For it, Jesus will lay down life.

Note that all those verses emphasize that it is the Father's work and the Son's work at the same time. Only the Creator of life can give us life. And through the Son.

Not through miracles but through His laying down life and giving us life, we are convinced that it is the work of God, our Creator. Praise the Lord!!!

Jesus showed enough signs of the One sent from God, but they refused to believe Him. If you are willing to refuse, you will find many excuses.

God’s grace is too big to grasp. People called the incarnation a blasphemy. We downsize the great privilege of being called God’s son and daughter.
