15: Caleb’s lands (Josh 14:1 – 15)

The assignment of the land begins with Caleb’s portion and concludes with Joshua’s. Both men were distinguished by their faith. This arrangement signifies that the inheritance of the land was secured through the faith of these two individuals.

πŸ‘‰ Read Joshua 14:1 - 15

Q1. (1 – 5) They assigned the land for (           ) and a half tribes by drawing (           ), as the Lord had instructed (            ). The (              ) were allotted no territory. And two portions were given to (             )’s descendants.

They assigned the land for ( nine ) and a half tribes by drawing ( lots  ), as the Lord had instructed ( Moses ). The (  Levites ) were allotted no territory. And two portions were given to ( Joseph )’s descendants.

Note that the author keeps saying there is no land for the Levites.

Receiving two portions signifies Joseph was counted as the firstborn among his brothers.

Q2. When they started to assign their lands, who first came and asked for their land?

The Judahites and Caleb

Q3. We can summarize Caleb’s words in three. “Forty years ago, Moses promised to give this land for I remained (       ) to the Lord my God. The Lord (             ) my life these forty-five years since He spoke these words to Moses. Now, (         ) me the land. Assuming (                     ), I will conquer them, as the Lord (            ).”

"Forty years ago, Moses promised to give this land for I remained ( loyal ) to the Lord my God. The Lord ( preserved ) my life these forty-five years since He spoke these words to Moses. Now, ( assign ) me the land. Assuming ( the Lord is with me ), I will conquer them, as the Lord ( promised ).”

“The Lord preserved my life.” When Moses sent out spies, the promise was: ‘Surely the land on which you walked will belong to you and your descendants.’ Caleb believed this and lived with the expectation of its fulfillment. The Lord kept him alive and made him strong enough for battle so that he could conquer the hill country he had spied on, thereby keeping the promise.

Therefore, Caleb was confident that the Lord would deliver the Anakites into his hands in the forthcoming battle. Thus, he boldly stepped forward and requested the land.

Q4. What is the requirement to acquire the land given by God? (hint: find three verses that explain why Caleb was able to inherit the land of Hebron)

faithful to God (remain loyal to God). v8, 9, 14.

Not all of those who entered the land had faith. Those without faith, even in the land of blessing, would not enjoy the blessings in their hearts.

“The land was free of war.” This is a sign that God’s reign has come upon that land.

The promise of the Lord was Caleb’s vision that sustained, directed, and motivated him through the seemingly boring and wasteful wilderness life. If you are alive today, there is a God's will to be fulfilled in your life. What is your vision and the Lord’s promise for you, so that you can stay focused and keep moving forward?
