11: The Lord made it clear that He had appointed Saul as king ( 1Samuel 10:1 – 27)

According to their desire, the Lord chose Saul and orchestrated everything so that he would be anointed king over Israel. The Lord assured Saul that it was the Lord who made him king.

πŸ‘‰ Read 1Samuel 10:1 - 27

Q1. Verse 1 summarizes verses 2 – 6. Samuel said, “(             ) has chosen you to lead (             ) Israel! You will deliver them from the power of (                  ). This will be your (              ) that the Lord has chosen you as leader over his (                 ).”

Samuel said, “(  The Lord  ) has chosen you to lead ( his people ) Israel! You will deliver them from the power of ( the enemies ). This will be your (  sign  ) that the Lord has chosen you as leader over his (  inheritance  ).”

Q2. What are the three signs given to Saul?

Saul will meet two men saying, "Donkeys have been found."

Saul will meet three men and be given two loaves of bread

Saul will meet a company of prophets and prophesy

These signs were to assure Saul that the Lord had chosen him.

Q3. Why does the Lord make it clear to Saul that the Lord had appointed him king? (7-8, 25)

The Lord wanted to clarify that Saul needed to obey God’s commands, which were given through Samuel, even though Saul was granted some degree of freedom in leading the people.

Saul should keep the instructions in the scroll of the kingship (25).

Q4. To assure Saul that the Lord had appointed him as king, He gave him signs and made His Spirit reside upon him. Find verses telling the Spirit worked in Saul, throughout this chapter.

verses 6, 7, 9 – 13. maybe verse 26.

God’s spirit worked in Saul until David was chosen. 16:14 says, “Now the Spirit of the Lord turned away from Saul.”

BTW, several verses highlight Saul's character. He hid his divine anointing from his uncle (14-16), possibly because he doubted it, noting, "Am I not a Benjaminite, from the smallest of Israel’s tribes...?" (9:21). He was shy enough to hide behind equipment (22) and was struggled to establish his kingship amid objections (27).

Q5. (17 – 24) Samuel called the people before (          ) at Mizpah and clarified that their request for a king was against God. Nevertheless, when Samuel initiated the process of casting lots, (       ) was chosen. This demonstrated to all Israelites that (         ) had selected Saul as their king. Seeing Saul's outlook as fitting for kingship more than anyone else, they exclaimed, “(                    )”

Samuel called the people before (the Lord) at Mizpah and clarified that their request for a king was against God. Nevertheless, when Samuel initiated the process of casting lots, (Saul) was chosen. This demonstrated to all Israelites that (the Lord) had selected Saul as their king. Seeing Saul's outlook as fitting for kingship more than anyone else, they exclaimed, “(Long live the king!)”

Samuel made it clear that they rejected God who saves them from all their troubles and distress. This means they will go through troubles and distress now, because of their kings.

Upon their request, the Lord chose Saul, anointed him, and officially confirmed his selection by lots. When the Lord appointed Saul as king, He affirmed this choice with signs and filled Saul with His Spirit. Saul was chosen by the Lord to protect His people, and the Lord's Spirit empowered him for this task. Thus, Saul was required to follow the Lord’s instructions.

Similarly, as workers for the church, the Lord’s inheritance, knowing that we are chosen by God and that His Spirit is with us, we must follow His guidance through the Spirit and the Word.
