Rather than focusing on themselves, they are to care for others by forgiving those who repent and to live before God with humility and gratitude. This section shows the mysterious nature of the Kingdom. The kingdom starts with a small seed but will grow big, yet many will fail to enter it. It will be suprise that the Jews fail to enter, while the Gentiles are brought in. Do not fear man, especially Pharisees who accuse Jesus’ followers, but fear God. Guard yourself from all sorts of greed, but rich toward God. Do not worry about your life. They were blinded because they did not seek the glory of God. Therefore, they focused only on outward things, seeking human praise. Knowing the Scriptures without putting them into practice only accumulated their self-righteousness, which led them to reject the prophets and even Jesus. Their behavior seriously distorted the truth and blocked the way of salvation for others. Though Peter confessed Jesus as the Christ, his understanding was of an earthly king. Therefore, Jesus revealed what the Messiah would truly do: bring about an exodus from the power of sin and death. God’s power works in ways we do not fully understand. The problems are often too big for human ability. But the disciples do not work alone.   This boat used to sail when water was high.   There are seasons of high tide and low tide in God’s work— seasons of revival and seasons of drought. When the tide rises, that is the time to row forward and go deeper. If we stay near the shore, we will be stranded when the water recedes. Right now, East Africa is in a high tide. Hearts are open, and the gospel is moving. But when prosperity grows, people feel less need for God, and a spiritual drought can follow. It happened to Israel when they entered the land of milk and honey—dependence faded in times of abundance. So we must work while the water is high, go to a deeper ocean, and prepare for the dry season. It will come.
