33: David is rejected by the Philistine leaders ( 1Samuel 29:1 – 11)

David was trusted by Achish but not by the other Philistine leaders. Thus, the Lord delivered David from a predicament: He needed to fight against Israel.

Q1. David and his men joined the army of Achish to attack Israel. How did it come that David was saved from attacking his own people?

The Philistine leaders rejected David.

Q2. "Even during David’s unwise decision to enter the land of the Philistines, God protected him. He persuaded Achish of David’s loyalty, granting David a degree of safety. At the same time, God caused the other Philistine leaders to recognize the threat David posed, which led them to send him away from the battlefield. Find related verses."

Convincing Achish of David's loyalty: (three verses):

Convincing the other Philistine leaders of David's threat: (four verses):

Verses 3, 6, and 9; verses 4–6 and 9

The Bible records that David was asked to get up ‘early’ in the morning to leave and did so. (10, 11). This shows how frantically they wanted him out of the Philistine camp.

Interestingly, Achish uses the Lord’s name (Yahweh) in his words (v. 6). He also reminds David that his men were the servants of Saul (v. 10). Through Achish’s words, the author subtly alludes to the fact that David belonged to Israel and needed to return to it.

Another observation: Although chapter 28 focuses on Saul’s trouble, it begins with David’s dilemma (vv. 1–2), which is resolved in chapter 29. Both Saul and David faced difficult situations that came from their own choices. Yet the Lord saved David, while Saul was left without help.

See how delicately the Lord guided David’s steps, even though David chose to become a subject of a Philistine king. So does He for you as well in Jesus Christ.
