34: The Marks of Faith (mustard seed): Forgiving(7times), Worthless servant, and Grateful (9 of 10)(Luke 17:1–19)

Having exposed the Pharisees' blindness, pride, and self-righteousness in Luke 14–16, Jesus now describes what His disciples should be like. Rather than focusing on themselves, they are to care for others by forgiving those who repent and to live before God with humility and gratitude. Such willingness to forgive, humility of self-denial, and grateful attitude are the marks of faith.

πŸ‘‰ Read Luke 17:1-19

Q1. For Jesus’ disciples, It looks like not to make others stumble because of you is as much important as you don’t sin. These are two commands given in 1-4. We are to be careful not to cause one of (                 ) to sin. Pay attention to yourselves! Don’t stop (               ) your brothers.

These little ones, forgiving.

We often focus on ourselves and think we are ok as long as we stand in faith regardless of others’ spiritual condition.

‘little ones’: they are prone to misunderstand the gospel and weak. Therefore, we should take special concern.

Their being ‘your brothers’ becomes the reason to forgive them and be reconciled.

‘seven times’: without limit.

Q2. Even if your faith is as little as (          ) , God's power is infinite, so nothing will be impossible if there is faith (5-6). The beginning of faith is to recognize you are (            ) and to take on the Lord's work faithfully (7-10).

a mustard seed, worthless,

7:5 is one of few places they are called ‘apostles’ rather then ‘disciples’. The apostles asked Jesus for greater faith. They thought the power of God comes according to the size of THEIR faith. However, the power comes from GOD. Even if your faith seems feeble and small, God could accomplish great things.

Regarding oneself worthless is a part of self-denial and a start of faith.

Q3. On the way up to (        ), Jesus healed ten lepers. Ten were healed, but only one returned (       ) and thanked Jesus. He was a (      ). Jesus said to him that (                       ).

On the way up to ( Jerusalem ), Jesus healed ten lepers. Ten were healed, but only one returned ( praising God ) and thanked Jesus. He was a (Samaritan ). Jesus said to him that ( Your faith has made you well ).

Note that they all had turned back to the priests (maybe) once hearing Jesus’ word without being healed, which shows a bit of faith.

He realized the healing has come from God and thus praised God. Even though he was a Samaritan. This episode highlights that the kingdom of God has come upon the Samaritan, but the Pharisees didn’t know about the coming of the kingdom and thus asked Jesus (20).
