41: Marriage and resurrection & David’s son and Lord (Luke 20:27 – 47)

The religious leaders failed to recognize Jesus as the Christ for three reasons explained in Luke 20. They were blinded by their ignorance of Scripture (failing to understand that God is not the God of the dead but of the living), by their desire for their own authority and glory (going beyond challenging Jesus' authority to seeking His death-their challenge against God's authority over life, and loving to be honored by people-taking glory that belongs to God), and by the mysterious identity of Christ (being both David's Son and David's Lord). Because of these, they were unable to recognize who He truly was.

Q1. The Sadducees denied the resurrection because it would conflict with the Levirate marriage law (marriage with the dead brother's wife). What was Jesus' answer to this? (two, vv34-36, 37-38)

They don’t marry at the resurrection

God is the God of the living, not the dead.

The Sadducees' question was based on the assumption that marriage continues after the resurrection. Jesus corrected this misunderstanding by explaining that those who are raised neither marry nor are given in marriage. He then pointed to an even stronger proof of the resurrection: God's covenant name. God calls Himself "the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." He is not the God of the dead but of the living. By identifying Himself with the patriarchs long after their deaths, God declares that they are alive to Him and will be raised. Therefore, God's own name bears witness to the certainty of the resurrection.



Q2. Why do you think Jesus said verses 41-44 after the debate about the resurrection with the Sadducees? 

Christ's identity was a mystery that they could not understand. Their pursuit of human glory blinded them both to their own sinfulness and to the mysterious glory of Christ. As a result, they challenged His authority.


Q3. Why would the teachers of the law be judged more severely? (vv46-47)

As teachers of the people, they had greater responsibility to guide others in the truth of God. However, they made themselves blind and led the people in the wrong direction. Behind their blindness was their willful pursuit of their own glory, which made them guilty.

Christ is a mysterious Savior. Therefore, God sent John the Baptist to proclaim Christ to Israel so that they might listen to his testimony. However, especially the religious leaders, were captivated and blinded by their pursuit of human glory and their privileged positions. As a result, they failed to accept John's testimony concerning the Son of God. Repentance is the first step to the knowledge of Christ.
