14: Unfinished Conquest & Eastern Tribes’ lands (Josh 13:1 – 33)

Image
Although Joshua led many years of conquest, unconquered lands remained. Now, the Lord instructed Joshua to divide the land and assign portions to each tribe so they could complete the conquest. Chapters 13–21 record the division of the land. πŸ‘‰ Read Joshua 13:1 - 33 Q1. Chapter 13 starts with the statement that Joshua was very old and a great deal of the lands were not conquered yet. What was the Lord’s instruction?  Answers πŸ‘‰ The Lord will drive them out before the Israelites. Joshua needs to parcel the land out first to each tribe. Joshua had fought numerous battles and wars for many years (Joshua 11:18), at least more than twenty years. Despite being a warrior of faith, he was still human and could not complete the conquest. The remaining work was entrusted to the next generation.  “before the Israelites”: The Lord didn’t first evacuate the land before they entered the land. He will expel the Canaanite residents when the Israelites try to settle down in the place...

12: A northern campaign & Summary of Israel’s victory (Josh 11:1 – 23)

“For the Lord determined to make them obstinate so they would attack Israel. He wanted Israel to annihilate them without mercy.” (11:20) πŸ‘‰ Read Joshua 11:1 - 23 Q1. Verses 1 – 15 can be summarized in three parts.  (1 – 5):  (        ) kings of northern territory gathered to fight against Israel. They were a (        ) army (6 – 9):  However, (            ) handed them over to Israel. Johua (              ) their horses and burned their chariots.  (10 – 15): Joshua did not ignore any of the (             ) the Lord had given (          ). 11: A southern campaign: One-sided victory (Josh 10:28 – 43)

“Joshua captured in one campaign all these kings and their lands, for the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel.” (10:42) πŸ‘‰ Read Joshua 10:28 - 43 Q1. Name the six cities that Joshua captured.  Answers πŸ‘‰ Makkedah, Libnah, Lachish, Eglon, Hebron, Debir See the map for a better understanding  ->  https://ibiblemaps.com/joshua-central/ Q2. Verses 40 – 43 conclude Joshua’s campaign. Summarize it in two sentences. (40, 41-43) Answer πŸ‘‰ He left no survivors  according to the Lord's comman d Joshua captured all these cities in one campaign, for the Lord fought for Israel. The author kept saying Joshua annihilated everyone: verses 28, 30, 32, 33, 35, 37, 39. The Lord helped Joshua (v30, 32). These are the expressions that emphasized that the battle was one-sided: ‘That day’(28), ‘the second day’ (32), ‘that day’ (35), ‘in one campaign’ (42) It was the Lord’s war. What matters is whether we stand on the Lord’s side or not. His kingdom and His church...

10: The Southern coalition army fought against the Lord (Josh 10:1 – 27)

Image
Now, the Israelites needed to fight the united army of five kings.  πŸ‘‰ Read Joshua 10:1 - 27 Q1. Why did the five Canaanite kings make a coalition to fight against Gibeon? Answers πŸ‘‰ The Gibeonites made a treaty with Joshua and the Israelites.  Interestingly, the author keeps saying ‘Joshua and the Israelites’ instead of ‘the Israelites.’  Maybe Joshua had planned to attack the Canaanite cities one by one. However, the mistake of making a treaty caused them to engage in war with the allied army. However, at such a fearful moment, even though it was caused by their mistake, the Lord helped them more miraculously than before. We don’t need to fear too much of making mistakes. Follow the Lord courageously, He will back up and support you. Q2. Find verses that say the Lord God fought for Israel. (four verses) Answer πŸ‘‰ v10, 11,12,14 Joshua was not perfect in following the Lord; he made mistakes in the battles of Ai and with the Gibeonites. However, he remai...

09: The Gibeonites: Deceit of Faith? (Josh 9:1 – 27)

Image
The Gibeonites deceived Joshua and the men of Israel and thus gained their lives. Was this in God’s plan? πŸ‘‰ Read Joshua 9:1 - 27 Q1. When Joshua’s victory spread to Canaanite kings, they allied to fight against (           ) and Israel. However, the Gibeonites did something (          ). They cheated Joshua as if they lived (            ). Answers πŸ‘‰ Joshua, clever, far away This reminds what the Lord promised to Joshua. “No one will be able to resist you all the days of your life” (Josh 1:5) Q2. The Israelites first doubted the Gibeonites’ words. But what do you think made their eyes blind and fooled by the Gibeonites’ trick? (v7-8, v14) Answer πŸ‘‰ The Gibeonites called themselves the subject of the Israelites. Their parents were slaves in Egypt. They knew what it would be like to have slaves. The words of the Gibeonites triggered their desire to be served and blinded their eyes....

08: Ai victory and Blessing ceremony (Josh 8:1 – 35)

Removal of the contamination restored their relationship with the Lord. The battle of Ai illustrates how faithfully they followed the Lord's direction and how the Lord worked alongside them. πŸ‘‰ Read Joshua 8:1 - 35 Q1. What was the Lord’s instruction to Joshua? (three, v2) Answers πŸ‘‰ Do to Ai and its king what they did to Jericho. They may take plunder. Set an ambush Q2. Joshua made a detailed plan according to the Lord’s overall direction: set an (           ) and set the city on (          ) (3 - 8). Everything went just as they planned (10 – 17). The Lord asked Joshua to hold out toward Ai his (            ) and thus gave him a clear sign of attack from ambush. Answer πŸ‘‰ Ambush, fire, curved sword Q3. What is the order of these five incidents? (sword, Fire, Turning back, ambush attack, panic) Answers πŸ‘‰ Sword, ambush attack, fire, panic of Ai soldiers, turning back to attack...

07: Achan caused the whole community contaminated (Josh 7:1 – 26)

God’s kindness saved those who belong to Rahab. God’s severity punished the whole Israelites because of Achan. πŸ‘‰ Read Joshua 7:1 - 26 Q1. Who disobeyed the Lord’s command?  Answers πŸ‘‰ The Israelites & Achan.  It seems strange to us that the Lord made them be defeated because of one person. We are so accustomed to individual faith and individual salvation which are not biblical.  Achan was the active violator. And the Israelites tolerated him among God’s holy congregation. Q2. Can you find two causes of their defeat by Ai? (v1 – 3) Answer πŸ‘‰ The primary reason is the Lord’s anger. The triggering cause is Joshua’s human confidence It seems that Joshua’s overconfident plan without asking the Lord was the direct cause of their failure. However, the primary reason was their disobedience ( מָΧ’ַל acted unfaithfully). Verse 13 will explain more.   In verse 2, the Lord already decided to do something against the Israelites. Joshua’s self-confidence trig...

06: Jericho collapsed as the Lord’s army marched (Josh 6:1 – 27)

Image
As the first town in Canaan, Jericho was uplifted to the Lord just like a burnt offering. The way they captured the town signifies that they just participated in the triumphal procession of the Lord into the land of Canaan. πŸ‘‰ Read Joshua 6:1 - 27 Q1. What was the order of their parade when they marched around Jericho? Answers πŸ‘‰ Soldiers – Priests’ horns – the Ark – soldiers Q2. The Bible keeps saying that the priests of the horns and the ark should march around Jericho. Find four verses saying that. Answer πŸ‘‰ v4, v6, v8, v13, and more This parade illustrates that the Canaanite conquest is God’s marching into the land of Canaan. As they marched around Jericho 13 times, they should not speak but would hear the sound of the horns. This reminded them of their wilderness life and that they had followed God’s guidance. The blowing of the horns meant the start or stop of their movement.  Q3. Why should they not take any items from Jericho? (v17-19) Answers πŸ‘‰ Th...

05: Circumcise them once again (Josh 5:2 – 15)

The Lord asked them to be circumcised in front of their enemies. Let’s learn why. πŸ‘‰ Read Joshua 5:2-15 Q1. What did they do after they crossed the Jordan? (two things) Answers πŸ‘‰ The did circumcision and kept the Passover feast Q2. Some were circumcised and some were not. Those younger than 40 were not circumcised. And those between 40 and 60 were circumcised in Egypt. Above 60, no one survived except Joshua and Caleb. Why did God ask those who were circumcised in Egypt to be circumcised again? (2, 6) Answer πŸ‘‰ Their circumcision was nullified by the rebellion of their father's generation. Though the parents' generation were circumcised, they rebelled against God at Kades Barnea. God swore that they would not enter Canaan. In this new generation who are entering the land, the Lord wanted to reinitiate the covenant of circumcision.  Verse 9: “disgrace of Egypt” symbolizes the circumcision done by unbelieving parents in Egypt. It is known that the ancient Egypt...

04: Remember that the Jordan stopped before the Lord (Josh 4:1 – 5:1)

Image
Why did the Lord ask them to build a stone pile? πŸ‘‰ Read Joshua 4:1 - 5:1 Q1. The Lord asked them to carry the stones from where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood and to build a pile of the stones on the other side of Jordan. Find the related verses that specify the place where they take stones.  Answers πŸ‘‰ Verses 3, 5, 7, and 9. Note the escalation of the implication of the place where the priests stood, through verses 3, 5, and 7: ‘Where the priests stand’, ‘in front of the ark of the Lord,’ and ‘before the ark of the covenant of the Lord.’ It was to teach that the Lord stopped the water to fulfill His covenantal promise. Nothing can stop the Lord’s faithful accomplishment of His promise in love. The death succumbed before the love of the cross. In the middle of the river, Joshua set up a pile of stones by his initiative, not by the Lord’s command. (v9) Q2. Write the order of events.     (      ) the wate...
