42: Look, this is your king! “We have no king except Caesar!” (John 19:1 – 16)

Though Pilate tried to release Jesus, the Jewish leaders kept shouting, 'Crucify him!'  πŸ‘‰ Read John 19: 1 - 16 Q 1. Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged (          ). The soldiers braided a crown of (        ) and put it on his head, and they clothed him in a (        ) robe. 41: Before Pilate: “My kingdom is not from this world.” (John 18:28 – 40)

Before the Roman governor, a ruler of this world, Jesus announced that His kingdom wasn't from this world and He had come to testify to the truth. πŸ‘‰ Read John 18:28 - 40 Q1. At that time, the Roman authority was turning a blind eye to the Jewish authority executing people according to Jewish law. Then, why did they say to Pilate that they couldn’t legally put anyone to death?  Answers πŸ‘‰ They wanted Jesus to be crucified by the Romans. (32) Being crucified on the tree could be interpreted as being cursed by God (Deut 21:23). They wanted to announce through Jesus’ crucifixion that Jesus was cursed by God and could not be the Messiah. Though He bore the curse, God’s grace overwhelmed the curse of our sins. The symbol of the curse has become the one of hope.  Q2. Pilate wondered why the Jews handed Jesus over to him. “Are you the (        ) of the Jews? (        ) own people and (        ) chief priests h...

40: Trial and denials: “Have one man die for the people” (John 18:12 – 27)

Jesus was brought to Annas, the high priest. Meanwhile, Peter denied Jesus three times. πŸ‘‰ Read John 18:12 - 27 Q1. What did the high priest Caiaphas say?  Answers πŸ‘‰ It is to their advantage that one man die for the people. Caiaphas said this in John 11:50. He meant that it was better to have Jesus die and keep the nation rather than being destroyed by Rome if letting Jesus' movement would trigger any riot against Rome. Ironically,  God accepted such a wicked plan and accomplished a greater salvation even for the Gentiles, through His death.   Q2. When Jesus was brought before (          ), John went into the house too, but (        ) left behind. As John came out and brought him in, the (           ) who watched the door said to Peter, “You are one of this man’s (           )!” He replied, “(            )!” Answer πŸ‘‰ When...

39: Voluntary Arrest (John 18:1 – 11)

Jesus gave in Himself to their evil plan rather than being reluctantly betrayed. And it was the Father’s will. πŸ‘‰ Read John 18:1 - 11 Q1. In the Gospel of Matthew, Judas specified Jesus by a kiss. In the Gospel of John, how did they recognize Jesus? Answers πŸ‘‰ Jesus Himself discloses His identity. Jesus knew everything that was going to happen and took the initiative to bear the cross. As the King, He took action to save His people. "I have not lost a single one of those you gave me." Jesus has kept saying this in various verses in John. When Jesus said, “I am he,” they retreated and fell to the ground. The Greek word for ‘I am he’ is ἐγώ Ξ΅αΌ°ΞΌΞΉ   (Ego eimi) which literally means ‘I am.’ Jesus frequently used this expression to announce His identity. You can find a short summary of the seven ‘I am’ statements at this link.  Jesus' "I Am" Statements - Thomas Nelson Bibles | Book of John I AM was the name of the LORD revealed to Moses at Mt. 38: Jesus’ Prayer and Our Vision for the Church (John 17:1 – 26)

This beautiful and heartful prayer of our Lord Jesus always touches our hearts. Jesus prayed not only for His disciples but also for all believers throughout generations. Yes, He prayed for each one of us, right before the crucifixion. And His prayer shall be answered and, thus, become our vision for the church and our spiritual journey. πŸ‘‰ Read John 17:1 - 26 Q1. “This is eternal life – that they know you, the (              ), and (            ).” He became a (       ) and lived with us so that we have fellowship with Jesus Christ. He revealed the One who (       ) Him and died to reconcile us to God so that we may have a relationship with the (            ). Answers πŸ‘‰ “This is eternal life – that they know you, the ( only true God ), and ( Jesus Christ ).” He became a ( man ) and lived with us so that we have fellowship with Jesus Christ....

37: Take courage, I have conquered the world (John 16:17 – 33)

As Jesus’ departure approached, Jesus explained to the worrying disciples what God would do now: to send the Holy Spirit to continue Jesus’ ministry. Though they could not understand fully, Jesus encouraged them to trust in Jesus who has conquered the world.  πŸ‘‰ Read John 16:17 - 33 Q1. What part of Jesus’ words was difficult for them to understand? Answers πŸ‘‰ ‘In a little while you will not see me; again after a little while, you will see me.’  They could not understand this saying would mean Jesus' death and resurrection. Or coming of the Holy Spirit.  Q2. The joy of that time will be like the joy of (          ). The joy will be so great that they won’t remember the present (        ). “You have sorrow now, but (   ) will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will (      ) your joy away from you.”  Answer πŸ‘‰ The joy of that time will be like the joy of ( child...

36: The Holy Spirit will prove the world wrong concerning … (John 15:18 – 6:16)

They will be left in a world hostile to Jesus and ignorant of the truth. The Church is to testify about Jesus in the world after Jesus' departure. How could they complete the mission?  πŸ‘‰ Read John 15:18 – 6:16 Q1. If the world hates the Christians, what would be the reasons? (18 - 19, 21) Answers πŸ‘‰ The world hates the Christians for they belong to Jesus, not to the world. The world doesn’t know the Father who sent Jesus. Some believe in God, but not Jesus. They believe in Jesus’ historical existence but not as the Savior of the world. To say, they don't accept the salvation through forgiveness. Q2. What acts would ‘the miraculous deeds that no one else did’ (verse 24) refer to?  Answer πŸ‘‰ To heal and give life. (more likely the cross and resurrection)  Lazarus’ resurrection alludes to Jesus being sent by the Creator of Life. Furthermore, Jesus’ cross and resurrection was the deed that only Jesus did. Even though they saw Jesus’ healing and giving life,...

35: I am the True Vine. You are the Branches (John 15:1 – 17)

Image
The vine tree analogy so vividly illustrates our relationship with Jesus. As the branches of a vine share the life of the vine, we share and live from Jesus’ life. πŸ‘‰ Read John 15:1 - 17 Q1. Why do we need to remain in Jesus? (2, 4) Answers πŸ‘‰ To bear fruit. God takes away any branch that doesn’t bear fruit. We might debate the security of salvation: do we lose our salvation if we bear no fruit? However, it is better to focus on how to bear fruit rather than how to get salvation.  “You are clean already.” It would refer to a born-again status, a rightful relationship with the Father, one who bathed (13:10). John uses the imagery of cleanness for salvation. In the OT bible, one should be ritually clean to stand before God.  When we believe Jesus’ gospel, we are reconciled with the Father. Though sinners, we can approach God by Jesus’ blood. The pruning (lit. cleaning) (2) of our life is to make us bear more fruit. “Remain”: You should stay, not stop by. No plant produ...

34: The New way of discipleship through the Holy Spirit (John 14:15 – 31)

Jesus said, “I am the way.” Then, how could they keep walking in the Way if Jesus returns to the Father? Here, Jesus introduces a new stage of discipleship after His departure, which is through the Holy Spirit.  πŸ‘‰ Read John 14:15 - 31 Q1. The 'another Advocate' refers to the Holy Spirit. How can we know Him though the world could not understand Him?  Answers πŸ‘‰ Because the Holy Spirit resides in us. The human mind cannot understand nor recognize the Spirit. Only when the Spirit enters our hearts, do we realize His presence. He is supernatural. “If you love me, …” The Spirit of God cannot reside in those who don’t love God. Q2. “The person who has my commandments and (         ) them is the one who (       ) me. The one who loves me will be loved by (          ), and I will love him and will (        ) myself to him.” Answer πŸ‘‰ “The person who has my commandments and ( o...

33: I am the way and the truth and the life (John 14:1 – 14)

Often we cry to the Lord amid chaotic moments of life, ‘Is this the right direction to success? Where are you leading to?’ just as the Philips asked, ‘Lord, show us the heaven. Then, we will keep following you.’ Then, Jesus will say to us, ‘Trust and follow me. I am the way.’ πŸ‘‰ Read John 14:1 - 14 Q1. “Do not let your hearts be (          ). You believe in God; believe also in (      ). There are many (         ) in my Father’s house. … Where I am (      ) may be too.” Answers πŸ‘‰ Distressed, me, dwelling places (rooms), you We don’t need to be worried about life in this world or about persecution. Whatever kind of death we would encounter, the Lord will lead us to our eternal dwelling places. What a comfort in this pilgrim journey! In the ancient Jewish world, the man should prepare a room in his father’s house before the marriage. When the preparation is done and the father’s decided time comes, ...

32: Betrayal and Denial (John 13:18 – 38)

Though Jesus loved them to the end, laying down His life, their response was betrayal and denial. πŸ‘‰ Read John 13:18 - 38 Q1. Why did Jesus foretell Judas’ betrayal? Answers πŸ‘‰ To let them know Jesus was the Messiah. Verse 20 alludes to Judas’ failure to accept Jesus. Judas must have believed in God but not Jesus, just like the religious leaders. Q2. Jesus was greatly distressed (verse      ) that He would be betrayed by someone so intimate that they eat together (verses     ,     ). Jesus pointed out Judas by handing out a peace of (         ). However, they didn’t catch the meaning.  Answer πŸ‘‰ 21, 18, 26, bread John said Satan entered to Judas after he took the bread. (27) John emphasizes Jesus’ initiative in approaching the cross. Denial or betrayal by own disciple and rejection by own people are a theme of Jesus’ crucifixion. Why did He need to be betrayed and denied? It tells the nature of ...

31: Jesus washed their feet (John 13:1 – 17)

After Jesus's public ministry, chapters 13 – 17 contain Jesus’ words, especially for His disciples and the church, before His crucifixion: Love one another (chapter 13). Promise of the Holy Spirit (chapter 14). Vine tree analogy (chapter 15). Encouragement words for them amid the hostile world (chapter 16). Jesus’ prayer and vision for the church (chapter 17). πŸ‘‰ Read John 13:1 - 17 Q1. The time of Jesus’ departure was approaching (1, 3). The disciples will be left behind, and the devil has already got into the heart of one disciple (2). Jesus so loved them (1) and wanted to teach them how to keep the church from the hostile world and Satan’s attacks. What are Jesus’ commands to keep the church safe? (14, 34 – 35) Answers πŸ‘‰ Wash one another’s feet (bearing the burden of other’s sin) Love one another just as Jesus loves you “Because Jesus knew that the Father had handed all things over to him.” The Father has given him the authority to forgive sins and to give life to any...
