30: He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart. (John 12:37 – 50)

This passage concludes Jesus’ public ministry and tells why they didn’t believe in Jesus. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Read John 12:37 - 50 Q1. According to Isaiah, why did they not believe Jesus despite seeing many miraculous signs? Answers ๐Ÿ‘‰ The Lord has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts. You would say, ‘Then, the Lord must be responsible for their destruction!’ However, carefully reading the passage reveals that they already had fallen away in disobedience. ‘So that they would … turn to me, and I would heal them.’ In the days of Isaiah, the Israelites persisted in their rebellion with superficial repentance. Therefore, the Lord decided to leave them in the unrepentant hearts so they would go through the furnace of purification for thorough repentance. Rebellion against the Sovereign God is innate to human nature. Hardening such a heart means boosting their arrogant pride, encouraging them to continue in their rebellion. I hope nothing in me, money or ability, should be used to strengthe...

29: The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified (John 12:20 – 36)

Jesus realized it was the time of the cross when some Greeks came to meet Jesus. The spiritual blindness of the Jews made Jesus crucified, thus opening the door of salvation for all nations. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Read John 12:20 - 36 Q1. Who came to see Jesus?  Answers ๐Ÿ‘‰ Some Greeks. The proselytes were Gentiles who revered the Lord and attended Jewish synagogue meetings. Some of them used to travel to Jerusalem for the Passover feast.  Coming of the Greeks was a sign to tell Jesus that this Passover was the time of crucifixion. That's why Jesus said, 'the time has come...' (23) Q2. “Unless a kernel of (         ) falls into the ground and (       ), it remains by itself (      ). But if it dies, it produces (        ) grain.”  Answer ๐Ÿ‘‰ “Unless a kernel of ( wheat  ) falls into the ground and ( dies ), it remains by itself ( alone ). But if it dies, it produces ( much ) grain.”  Jes...

28: Anointing: "you will not always have me" (John 12:1 – 19)

As the time of the crucifixion approaches, the distinction becomes clearer between those who welcome Jesus and those who reject.  ๐Ÿ‘‰ Read John 12:1 - 19 Q1. Mary anointed the (        ) of Jesus and wiped his feet dry with her (       ). Judas said it could instead be used for the (         ). However, he was a (        ) and used to steal from the money box.  Answers ๐Ÿ‘‰ Mary anointed the ( feet ) of Jesus and wiped his feet dry with her ( hair ). Judas said it could instead be used for the ( poor ). However, he was a ( thief ) and used to steal from the money box. Mary’s act shows her absolute dedication to Jesus, especially in Jewish culture at that time. 300 silver coins were worth the labor’s wage of 300 days.  Verses 4 and 6 elaborate on who Judas was. Note that the author called him ‘a thief.’ Such a categorization implies his habitual stealing of money. In John’s theology...

27: Lazarus, come out! (John 11:38 – 57)

Jesus called the Lazarus out from the tomb. This is what the Father does: to give life to the world.  ๐Ÿ‘‰ Read John 11:38 - 57 Q1. Jesus, (        ) moved again, came to the tomb and said, “Take away the stone.” However, Martha, the sister of the (          ), hesitated. Jesus replied, “Didn’t I tell you that if you (          ), you would see the (        ) of God?”  Answers ๐Ÿ‘‰ Jesus, ( intensely ) moved again, came to the tomb and said, “Take away the stone.” However, Martha, the sister of the ( deceased ), hesitated. Jesus replied, “Didn’t I tell you that if you ( believe ), you would see the ( glory ) of God?” Jesus was upset at their lack of faith (27, 37, 40).  Why did Jesus ask Martha to move the stone? He disclosed her lack of faith and challenged her to believe in Jesus for what He was about to do.  The passage emphasizes that he was dead.  Q2. In fro...

26: "I am the resurrection and the life." Do you believe this? (John 11:1 – 37)

Though He heard that Lazarus was sick, He said, ‘This sickness will lead to God’s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified throught it,’ and stayed for two more days.  ๐Ÿ‘‰ Read John 11:1 - 37 Q1. Though Jesus loved them, why do you think He has delayed to come? Answers ๐Ÿ‘‰ To wait until he dies. Or to make sure of his death. “Now it was Mary who anointed” (2) “the one you love” (3) “Now Jesus loved ….” (5) All these expressions show their special relationship. Therefore, they expected Jesus would come right away when He heard it. But, he delayed coming for an unknown reason. They must be disappointed as much as they were in a close relationship. (9 – 10) In the daytime, they have a light and dare not do evil. When they have a light inside their heart, they don’t want to do evil. Q2. Find two verses showing reasons for Jesus’ delay. Answer ๐Ÿ‘‰ Verses 4 and 14 When God intervenes in our lives, there are two purposes: His glory and our faith.  When God’s answ...

25: ‘Tell us plainly’ vs ‘The Father and I are one.’ (John 10:22 – 42)

As Jesus announced the Father and Jesus were one, the Jewish leaders tried to stone him. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Read John 10:22 - 42 Q1. Why did the Jewish leaders not believe in Jesus? Answers ๐Ÿ‘‰ They refused to believe in Jesus, for they were not Jesus’ sheep. ‘you refused to believe.’ This tells their willing refusal.  Note that Jesus Himself doesn’t call Himself the Messiah. Instead, He called Himself the One sent from God. He focused on doing the Father’s works and proclaiming His words. From Jesus’ works, they could have concluded that He was the Messiah sent from God. But they refused to admit it. Instead, they asked Jesus to admit His identity as the Messiah plainly, which Jesus wouldn’t do. Q2. They asked Jesus if He were the (           ). But Jesus claimed that the (          ) and He are one. Because of this, they condemned Him of (             ) and tried to stone Him. Answer ๐Ÿ‘‰ The...

24: I am the good shepherd (John 10:1 – 21)

Jesus illustrates His relationship with us by analogy between the shepherd and the sheep. Note that the shepherd knows his sheep, and the sheep knows her shepherd. Do you know your shepherd? ๐Ÿ‘‰ Read John 10:1 - 21 Q1. In a community sheepfold, more than one flock might spend the night, and the doorkeeper would keep watch to protect the sheep. In the morning, the doorkeeper would open the door for the shepherds. Each shepherd would collect his flock by calling out to the sheep. How would the sheep recognize the shepherd? Answers ๐Ÿ‘‰ Sheep knows his voice. The sheep don’t know her shepherd by his outlook, name, or anything else but his voice. Do you know His voice? If not, accept Him as your Lord and Savior. You will know Jesus’ love and grace when you hear the gospel. You will know his personality and character and read his heart. You will be able to distinguish between strange teachings and authentic ones. You will understand the Bible and His will. This is how you recognize His...

23: For judgment I have come: the blind may see, and the seer may become blind. (John 9:18 – 41)

Though the blind man recognized the Messiah, the religious leaders failed. This is the judgment that Jesus has come for. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Read John 9:18 - 41 Q1. Why did his parents reply to the religious leaders, ‘Ask him, He will speak for himself’? Answers ๐Ÿ‘‰ They were afraid of the Jewish leaders and to be kicked out of the community. Q2. Why did the religious leaders ask his parents if he was born blind? Why did they ask him again how he got healed?  Answer ๐Ÿ‘‰ They didn’t want to acknowledge Jesus was from God. They had already concluded Jesus was a sinner and tried to deny the facts that fairly asserted Jesus was the Messiah. Q3. What caused them to be blind to recognize Jesus? (28)    Answers ๐Ÿ‘‰ They were so obsessed with being Moses’ disciples.  Their religious pride, privilege, and obsession with the literal statutes of the law blinded their eyes to recognize the Incarnated Word. ‘Healing of the born blind’ has never been heard (32). Thus, it sh...

22: Healing of the Born Blind: ‘He is a prophet’ (John 9:1 – 17)

Jesus’ healing of the born blind caused trouble with the Pharisees. It was on a Sabbath. But, this is to reveal the acts of God. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Read John 9:1 - 17 Q1. “The man was born blind so that (                ) may be revealed. And the revelation could be done through Jesus Christ, who is the (          ) of the world.”  Answers ๐Ÿ‘‰ The acts of God, light. Though this man was born blind and suffered for forty years, he was blessed to participate in Jesus’ ministry. If there is no light, no one can work and nothing can be revealed. Only when the light of Jesus shines, any ministry be meaningful. The passage alludes that God reveals His works only through Jesus Christ.  The Bible emphasizes that this man was blind from birth. Q2. Find the verses that describe how the man was healed. (three places) Answer ๐Ÿ‘‰ Verses 6-7, 10-11, 15. Why did Jesus smear mud on his eyes and make the man manage to travel to t...

21: Abraham’s children and the Devil’s children (John 8:31 – 59)

Jesus clearly pinpointed the reason for their unbelief. “You people are from your father the devil, and you want to do what your father desires.” (44) ๐Ÿ‘‰ Read John 8:31 - 59 Q1. “If you continue to (          ) my teaching, you are really my disciples, and you (        ) know the (       ), and the truth will set you (        ) from the slavery of (        ).” This is how the (       ) sets us free (36). However, they didn’t want his teaching and tried to (        ) Jesus. Answers ๐Ÿ‘‰ If you continue to ( follow ) my teaching, you are really my disciples and, you ( will ) know the ( truth ), and the truth will set you ( free ) from the slavery of ( sin ).” This is how the ( son ) sets us free. However, they didn’t want this teaching and tried to ( kill ) Jesus. As you walk with the Lord day by day, you will get to know more about the t...

20: “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know” (John 8:12 – 30)

Jesus Himself proclaimed to be the light of the world, which testifies to the Father. However, they didn’t accept this statement claiming it was one man’s testimony.  ๐Ÿ‘‰ Read John 8:12 - 30 Q1. “I am the (          ) of the world! The one who (          ) me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of (        ).” Answers ๐Ÿ‘‰ “I am the ( light  ) of the world! The one who ( follows ) me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of ( life ).” A light is shone on something and to reveal it to the world. Jesus came to testify about God. He didn’t testify about Himself.  To follow the light is to have the light. Then, you won't fall down. Only when you follow Jesus, you will make the right decisions in your life.  And the nature of the light is life, not prosperity. As you follow Jesus, you have peace in your heart and will inherit eternal life. In the previous passage, ...

19: One without sin be the first to throw (John 8:1 – 11)

This passage is known not in the original version of the Gospel of John, but to have been inserted later. However, the church accepts it as a part of John’s gospel because we can hear the Lord’s voice which is consistent with other parts of the Bible. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Read John 8:1 - 11 Q1. What was their purpose when they brought the woman?  Answers ๐Ÿ‘‰ They wanted to trap Jesus with what He would say.  If He says ‘execute her’ according to the Mosaic Law, it would be contrary to His usual teachings of grace and forgiveness. If He says, ‘pardon her,’ it would be deteriorating the Law. The problem was how to reconcile justice and grace.   Q2. Jesus wrote on the ground and said, “Whoever among you is (             ) may be the (          ) to throw a stone.”  Answer ๐Ÿ‘‰ Guiltless, first Writing on the ground: It is not known what Jesus had written on the ground. However, writing something with His finger co...
