18: “From within him will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:37 – 52)

On the last day of the feast, Jesus proclaimed that He was the one who would fulfill the hope of salvation raised in their hearts while observing the Feast every year that celebrated the Lord’s past deliverance. πŸ‘‰ Read John 7:37 - 52 Q1. The 'rivers of living water' refer to the Holy Spirit. How to receive the Spirit?  Answers πŸ‘‰ Come to Jesus and believe in Him If you are thirsty and hungry in your soul, you are able to go to Jesus. If not, not yet.  Verse 39. Know that Jesus’ sacrifice was required for the Holy Spirit to come to us. The Feast of Temporary Shelters (or Sukkot) commemorates Israel’s deliverance from Egypt and their life in the wilderness, as described in Leviticus 23:34-44. Also, it is time to thank God for His blessings in Canaan, as in Deuteronomy 16:13-15.  People traditionally decorate these temporary dwellings with harvest fruits, lights, and lots of color. They “dwell” in them for seven days just as the Lord commanded, to commemorate thei...

17: Their confusion: Where did He come from? (John 7:25 – 36)

They questioned about Jesus’ teaching in the previous passage. Here, they couldn’t believe Jesus had come from God.  πŸ‘‰ Read John 7:25 - 36 Q1. They were confused about where Jesus had come from (25 – 27). They knew Jesus’ earthly origin: his father and mother. Why did they not know Jesus’ heavenly origin? (28 - 29)  Answers πŸ‘‰ They did not know God who sent Jesus. They had known the saying, ‘Whenever the Christ comes, no one will know where he comes from.’ However, they knew Jesus was born of Mary in Nazareth. That’s why they thought Jesus wasn’t the Christ.  Another confusion is this. They knew the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem, the town of David. In fact, He was born there. However, He grew up in Nazareth and was thus called a Nazarene. This caused their confusion as well. “the one who sent me is true’: The Father is trustworthy in that His words, especially about Christ, will be fulfilled even though they seem contradictory for now. If you want to do Go...

16: If anyone wants to do God’s will, He will know my teaching (John 7:1 – 24)

While the people in Galilee refused Jesus’ teaching for they sought earthly blessings, the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem refused Jesus’ teaching for a different reason. πŸ‘‰ Read John 7:1 - 24 Q1. Jesus replied, “My (         ) has not yet arrived, but you are ready at any opportunity. The world cannot hate you, but (           ), because I am testifying that its deeds are (         ).” Though Jesus had said wouldn’t go up to this feast, he went up in (          ) because the Jewish leaders wanted to (        ) him.  Answers πŸ‘‰ Jesus replied, “My ( time ) has not yet arrived, but you are ready at any opportunity. The world cannot hate you, but (  me  ), because I am testifying that its deeds are ( evil  ).” Though Jesus had said wouldn’t go up to this feast, he went up in (  secret  ) because the Jewish leaders wanted to ( kill...

15: Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life (John 6:59 – 71)

After Jesus’ message of the Bread of Life, many left Jesus. However, the twelve kept following.  πŸ‘‰ Read John 6:59 - 71 Q1. Many of his disciples complained that His message was too difficult. However, He would yet reveal things that would be even harder for them to accept than what they had heard so far. Why was it difficult for them to understand? (63-65) Answers πŸ‘‰ They tried to understand spiritual things through human (carnal) minds. They didn’t believe in Jesus The Father hasn’t allowed them to come to Jesus. Jesus’ message is spirit and life. That’s why human nature (‘flesh’ in Greek) which was destined to death cannot comprehend it.  You should believe Jesus and ask the Holy Spirit. Then, you can understand the message because the Spirit can discern spiritual matters. That’s why unless the Father gives you the Spirit, you cannot understand it. Q2. After this (          ) of his disciples quit following him. But the twelve remaine...

14: The Bread that I will give is my flesh (John 6:41 – 58)

The message of the Bread of Life was difficult for them to understand. As Jesus said, “I am the bread of life that came down from heaven,” they raised two objections: “How did he come from heaven” and “How can he give us his flesh to eat?”  πŸ‘‰ Read John 6:41 - 58 Q1. (41 – 44) What do you think caused them not to believe Jesus? (two, 41-42, 43-44) Answers πŸ‘‰ They knew Jesus’ family background very well. The Father hasn’t drawn them to Jesus. Too much worldly knowledge of Jesus would hinder your faith. Without a personal encounter with Jesus, your Biblical knowledge might hinder faith.  ‘Jesus doesn’t send them away.’ (37) Their unbelief was not because Jesus made His message difficult to understand. Only the Father didn’t send them to Jesus. “I will raise him up at the last day.” This repeats three times: verses 39, 40, 44. This could be another factor that makes it hard to believe. Their salvation will be completed at the last day, not today. Thus, anyone who wants ...

13: “I Am the Bread of Life” (John 6:25 – 40)

The feeding miracle made people flock to Jesus all the more. Then, Jesus announced the gospel of eternal life by declaring ‘I AM the bread of life’ and tried to turn their interest from earthly things to the heavenly ones.  πŸ‘‰ Read John 6:25 - 40 Q1. Jesus introduces them the food that remains to eternal life  (25 – 27). They saw the signs that Jesus was the Messiah and crowded after Him. What did they expect from their Messiah? (26 – 27) Answers πŸ‘‰ The food of this world. Wealth and blessings in this world. Verse 27 explains how we could have eternal life. The earthly food disappears and, thus, can't make us live forever. We need eternal food to live eternally. Jesus gave Himself as the eternal bread for us. Therefore, anyone who eats Jesus’ flesh and blood lives forever. And this is God’s approved plan for our salvation.  Q2. They wanted to get the eternal food. Jesus explains how to get it (28 – 34). They thought they would get the bread by doing some wo...

12: Feeding 5000: This is the Prophet who is to come (John 6:1 – 24)

As Jesus fed the crowd with five loaves of bread, they believed Jesus was the Messiah and tried to force Him to be their king. πŸ‘‰ Read John 6:1 - 24 Q1. (1 – 9) Find verses that describe their problem. (two verses) Answers πŸ‘‰ Verse 7: “200 silver coins wouldn’t be enough” Verse 9: “What good are these for so many people?” Verse 4 tells that it was nearing the Passover feast. It was right before the first harvest. Thus, most people didn’t have enough food.  Those verses show they needed food.  Q2. Jesus fed 5,000 people with (        ) loaves of bread and (        ) fish. Everyone was (            ). And they collected (           ) baskets of leftovers.  Answer πŸ‘‰ Five, two, satisfied, twelve. “as much as they wanted,” “all satisfied,” and “twelve baskets with broken pieces from five loaves left over,” All these expressions tell they were satisfied. Five l...

11: Authenticity of Jesus' Testimony (John 5:24 – 47)

In this passage, Jesus would explain what the ‘greater deeds’ mean? As they doubted the credibility of Jesus’ testimony, Jesus pointed out the reason for their unbelief. πŸ‘‰ Read John 5:24 - 47 Q1. According to Jesus, who has eternal life? Answers πŸ‘‰ The one who hears Jesus’ message and believes the one who sent Him. You should believe Jesus’ testimony about God, not someone else’s or your imagination about God. How do we confirm His testimony is authentic? When you hear the voice, your soul will live. Thus, you know it is the voice of the Son of God. In verse 25, using the word ‘voice’ rather than ‘message’ emphasizes a personal relationship with Jesus. Jesus calls each of us by name, not gathering anonymously by posting on a bulletin board. John portrays the eternal life you have now, not you need to wait to get it in the future. Q2. What does it mean that you believe God has sent the Son? (26, 27) Answer πŸ‘‰ God has granted the Son to have life in himself God has gra...

10: The Sabbath: My Father is working, I too am working. (John 5:1 – 23)

Healing and making the man carry his mat on a Sabbath aroused the religious leaders’ accusations. However, Jesus went further by saying, “My Father is working, I too am working.” Now, listen to Jesus’ rationale in saying that. πŸ‘‰ Read John 5:1 - 23 Q1. This man has been disabled for (          ) years but has no one to help him get in the water of (            ). However, when Jesus told him, ‘(           )! Pick up your mat and walk,’ he picked up his mat and walked. Now, that day was a (           ). Answers πŸ‘‰ This man has been disabled for ( thirty-eight ) years but has no one to help him get in the water of ( Bethzatha ). However, when Jesus told him, ‘( Stand up )! Pick up your mat and walk,’ he picked up his mat and walked. Now, that day was a ( Sabbath ). Bethzatha: Beth-Hesed “house of mercy.” The mercy was only for the first person. The rest would say, i...

09: The Jews in Galilee didn’t believe without a sign (John 4:43 – 54)

Though the Samaritans believed in Jesus without any miracle, the Jews wanted to see signs to believe in Jesus.  πŸ‘‰ Read John 4:43 - 54 Q1. The officer said to Jesus, “(             ) before my child (         ).” But Jesus said to him, “(           ); your son will live.” The man (             ) the word and set off for home. Answers πŸ‘‰ The officer said to Jesus, “( Come down ) before my child ( dies ).” But Jesus said to him, “( Go home ); your son will live.” The man ( believed ) the word and set off for home. The father thought Jesus should come to his son for healing just as other prophets did for healing. However, Jesus challenged him to believe Jesus had the power of ‘remote healing.’  Each time when we come to the Lord, He challenges us to upgrade our faith. Q2. The officer's home was in (            ...

08: My food is to do the will of the one who sent me (John 4:27 – 42)

Another theme in Chapter 4, other than the new worship, is the hunger and thirst in the human soul. Thirst will be quenched by the living water from the Lord. What about the hunger? πŸ‘‰ Read John 4:27 - 42 Q1. What did the woman do as soon as she knew Jesus was the Messiah?  Answers πŸ‘‰ She left her water jar, went off into the town, and evangelized them. Jesus didn’t ask her to call the townspeople. However, as soon as she heard that Jesus was the Messiah, she voluntarily went and shared the gospel. She used to be an unwelcoming woman, but now, she has become an evangelist. Q2. What was Jesus’ food? (34) Answer πŸ‘‰ To do the will of the One who sent Jesus and to complete His work Most people get satisfaction through achieving what they want. However, Jesus got satisfaction in doing God's will. Only the person with the Spirit of God can do God's will. Thus, that person lives and gets satisfied because of the Spirit of living God. Jesus rather said ‘to do the will...

07: A Gospel for All Nations: The Time Has Come, to worship in spirit and truth (John 4:1 – 26)

The message of true worship was first proclaimed to the Samaritan woman, not to the religious leaders in Jerusalem. Jesus’ gospel will go beyond the Jewish boundary. πŸ‘‰ Read John 4:1 - 26 Q1. Jesus came to a Samaritan town called (          ) and sat by (              ). The time was about (         ). He asked a Samaritan woman for water, but she refused because Jesus was a (         ). Answers πŸ‘‰ Sychar, Jacob’s well, noon, Jew “But he had to pass through Samaria.” (4) From Judea to Galilee, they used to detour through the Transjordan route to avoid Samaritan towns. Jesus’ visiting a Samaritan town and asking for water from a Samaritan woman was unusual in those days’ custom. Note how many times verses 4 – 9 address ‘Samaritan.’ Six times! Why Jesus needed to visit the Samaritan village is not known. However, we can say that the message of true worship in Spirit and T...

06: Attitude of an Evangelist: He must become greater, I must become less (John 3:22 – 36)

Though John the Baptist testified that Jesus was God’s chosen one. However, Jesus’ teaching seemed a bit different from John’s teaching. Let’s see how John responded to this. πŸ‘‰ Read John 3:22 - 36 Q1. After the dispute concerning (                   ), John’s disciples complained to John that everyone was flocking to Jesus for baptism. Then, John said, “No one receives anything unless from (           ).” He meant that people came to Jesus because God sent them. Also, he added, “I am not the (          ). He must become (         ) important while I become (          ) important.” Answers πŸ‘‰ After the dispute concerning ( ceremonial washing ), John’s disciples complained to John that everyone was flocking to Jesus for baptism. Then, John said, “No one receives anything unless from ( heaven  ).” He meant that people cam...

05: God so loved the world that He gave his one and only son (John 3:1 – 21)

Unlike the other gospels, John explicitly proclaims the gospel of eternal life  πŸ‘‰ Read Bible text Q1. “I tell you the solemn truth: unless a person is born of (         ) and (         ), he cannot enter the kingdom of God. What is born of the (           ) is flesh, and what is born of the (          ) is spirit. Answers πŸ‘‰ Water, spirit, flesh, spirit. Those who were born from above are born of water and spirit. (3, 5) ‘born from above’ = ‘born again’ Born of water: cleansing of perceivable sinful acts: repentance, baptism, resistance against sin. Born of the Spirit: renewal of the heart by the Holy Spirit. You love God and your neighbor from your heart. The born from above is a whole new creation, not an amended and improved old creation. That means, no matter how much good work you do, you wouldn’t be qualified for the kingdom of God.  As we know the wind only ...
