19: Third Prediction & Disciples’ Blindness & Healing (Mark 10:32 – 52)

The disciples were reluctant to follow Jesus, who was going to die. Furthermore, James and John explicitly asked for higher places when the kingdom comes. πŸ‘‰ Read Mark 10:32 - 52 Q1. The third prediction of His death is more complete than the previous ones. What is new in the third?  Answers πŸ‘‰ Jesus will be killed in Jerusalem Jesus will be mocked and killed by the Gentiles. The prediction comprises three elements. The Messiah will be betrayed and condemned by His own people, mocked and killed by the Gentiles, and rise again.  Q2. When they asked for the higher ranks, what was Jesus’ answer? Answer πŸ‘‰ “You don’t know what you are asking.”  If you want to share Jesus’ glory, you should share His suffering as well. What they asked was the cup of Jesus’ suffering. However, the glory of sitting next to Jesus is not something you can achieve through your works.  Q3. This should be the way of the believers. ‘Whoever wants to be great among you must be y...

18: The Law vs Following Jesus: divorce, little children, the rich man (Mark 10:1 – 30)

This was the last moment before Jesus entered Jerusalem. He explained why they could not understand Jesus’ message. They relied on the law and their own works.  πŸ‘‰ Read Mark 10:1 - 30 Q1. Divorce is not God’s will. Then, why did Moses allow it?  Answers πŸ‘‰ Because of our hard hearts.  Though divorce is not God’s will, if you really want to divorce your wife, you should give her a certificate of divorce so that she can marry another man. Divorcing your wife is bad, but not giving the certificate is worse.  You can’t say you have followed God’s will only as you have kept the law. The law is the minimum requirement for you not to go too far from the Lord, like a fence for sheep. Q2. “I tell you the (           ), whoever dose not receive the kingdom of God like a (          ) will never enter it.” Answer πŸ‘‰ Truth, child Receive the kingdom with purehearted devotion, without calculation of gain and lo...

17: The second prediction & the discipleship (Mark 9:30 – 50)

Jesus kept telling His disciples of his death and resurrection. But, They tried to win the highest place and monopolize the privilege of the discipleship of the Lord. πŸ‘‰ Read Mark 9:30 - 50 Q1. Compare the first prediction of death (8:31) and the second prediction (9:31). What is the new in the second?  Answers πŸ‘‰ The Son of Man will be betrayed. The first prediction focuses on the rejection of Christ by the Jewish leaders. It is because the ministry of Christ won’t be in accord with their ambition for a Jewish nation.  The second one addresses the betrayal of Jesus by one of His followers. This announcement must be shocking for those who were following Jesus.  They might have questioned, ‘We all love and follow Him. How could one of us betray Him?’ However, in connection with the following passage where the disciples were arguing who was the greatest, the author says, ‘Anyone who seeks own glory while following could betray Him.’  Jesus didn’t say, ‘I will b...

16: The Transfiguration & Lack of Faith (Mark 9:2 – 29)

After the announcement of His death, Jesus showed His glory to the three disciples. Meanwhile, His disciples could not cast out the spirit from a boy.  πŸ‘‰ Read Mark 9:2 - 29 Q1. Jesus was (                 ) on the mountain and talked with (              ) and (             ). A voice came from the cloud. “This is my one dear Son, (                    )” Answers πŸ‘‰ Transfigured, Moses, Elijah, Listen to Him! Transfigured: Jesus was transformed into a divine being.  Jesus’ talking with Moses and Elijah portrays that Jesus is the Messiah that the Law (Pentateuch) and the prophets have prospected. Jesus will fulfill the Law and accomplish the prophecies.  Jesus is a prophet like Moses, as Deuteronomy 18:15 foretells. If God sent a new prophet, they were supposed to listen to him regardless of what previou...

15: Peter’s Confession and Beyond (Mark 8:22 – 9:1)

Finally, Peter confessed Jesus as the Messiah. However, his understanding of the Messiah was limited to human expectations. Thus, Jesus revealed what the Messiah would do. πŸ‘‰ Read Mark 8:22 - 9:1 Q1. Jesus took the blind man (            ) of the village. He healed the man by spitting and placing his hands on the eyes. And his sight was restored in (            ) stages. And Jesus asked the man not to enter the (             ). Answers πŸ‘‰ Outside, two, village Jesus took him outside the village not to let the healing be seen publically in the village. After the confrontation with the Pharisees regarding the elders’ traditions, Jesus paid a special caution for his healing miracles not to be seen by the public. (7:24, 33, 8:23, 26) Especially for this town of Bethsaida, Jesus rebuked their unrepentant hearts despite many miracles. (Matt 11:21). Q2. In the village of (    ...

14: Feeding of 4000 and Pharisees asking signs (Mark 8:1 – 21)

Jesus happened to feed four thousand with seven loaves of bread. However, the disciples failed to understand the meaning of the miracle. Jesus explains why they couldn’t understand.  πŸ‘‰ Read Mark 8:1 - 21 Q1. Jesus tried to focus on teaching rather than healing. However, occasionally, He performed miracles of healing. Here in this passage, what motivated Jesus to feed the crowd?  Answers πŸ‘‰ ANS: He has compassion for them. Out of compassion, Jesus often healed them despite that teaching was his primary ministry. They didn’t ask for food. But Jesus knew their hunger and fed them. Jesus wants to provide for our daily and trivial needs as well. Q2. Jesus (           ) the bread to the disciples, and they (            ) the people. Everyone ate and was (              ). They picked up (             ) baskets of the leftovers.  Ans...

13: Healing in Gentile Towns (Mark 7:24 – 37)

Jesus has broken their traditions derived from their misinterpretation of the purity law (Lev 11). A wrong application of the purity law was their alienation and hostility against the Gentiles. Then, Jesus visited the gentile region and healed them.  πŸ‘‰ Read Mark 7:24 - 37 Q1. What was the Syrophoenician woman’s faith? Answers πŸ‘‰ ANS: She humbled herself to be called a dog. She thought that only crumbs of Jesus’ power and grace were enough to heal her daughter. Even crumbs of your grace are enough for me! “I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God     than dwell in the tents of wickedness.” (Ps 84:10) “It is not right to take the children’s bread and to throw it to the dogs.” Jesus might have meant that becoming children of God is more important than being healed. It meant, ‘Do you want a blessing as children of God? Believe the gospel and become His child!’  Q2. What did Jesus say when he healed the deaf-mute? And its meaning? Answer πŸ‘‰...

12: Breaking Human Tradition (Mark 7:1 – 23)

Complaints of the Pharisees have been accumulated against Jesus. They accused Jesus’ disciples of eating the bread with unwashed hands, which is ritually unclean. πŸ‘‰ Read Mark 7:1 - 23 Q1. Why did Jesus say Pharisees were hypocrites? (v6-7) Answers πŸ‘‰ ANS: What their lips say doesn’t accord with what their hearts desire. They claim to worship God but teach human traditions. Q2. (8 – 13) Jesus points out how they ignore God’s commands by their traditions. If they said to their parents, ‘anything that you would reive from me is (             ), which is a gift for God,’ they thought they were exempt from the command, (                        ), for serving God has a higher priority than serving parents.  Answer πŸ‘‰ ANS: corban, honor your father and your mother. Note that their traditions were not of idolatry but of serving God. The elders’ tradition was how to resolve co...

11: Disciples’ Blindness (Feeding 5,000 & Walking on Water) (Mark 6:30 – 52)

After rejections, Jesus focused on training His disciples. However, the disciples were slow to understand Jesus’ true identity. πŸ‘‰ Read Mark 6:30 - 56 When they returned from the mission, what did Jesus say to them? Answers πŸ‘‰ "Come with me to an isolated place and take a rest." We need a time of rest with the Lord to restore our spiritual energy after ministry.  Interestingly, Mark recorded the death of John between the sending and the returning of the twelve.  This arrangement might allude to the persecution of Jesus and His apostles. John the Baptist also was a messenger who proclaimed repentance and was killed because of the message.   In Luke, when seventy-two returned with joy, Jesus told them to rejoice more for their salvation than their ministry output (Luke 10:17-20). Jesus saw a large crowd and had compassion for them because they were like (                         ). So he ...

10: Rejection and Misunderstanding (Mark 6:1 – 29)

Despite the manifestation of Jesus' power over death, His townspeople rejected Him, and some thought Him a resurrected John the Baptist. πŸ‘‰ Read Mark 6:1- 29 Q1. Why did they reject Jesus? (3 – 4) Answers πŸ‘‰ ANS. They had seen Jesus since He was little. Thus, they refused to accept Jesus’ claim to be the Messiah, which is more than they had known Him through their experience. Humane familiarity often blocks spiritual eyes. They did not deny Jesus’ power, for they had seen it. But, they didn’t accept Jesus’ gospel, which they could not confirm through experience. “He was not able to do a miracle there.” The opposite example was the woman of hemorrhage. Jesus said to her, ‘Your faith has made you well’ (5:34). Those statements allude to the fact that the coming of a miracle depends on our faith.  Why can Jesus not perform miracles if we don’t have faith? Is Jesus’ power limited by our faith? Of course not! However, it is the Father’s will that salvation should come through fait...

09: Faith is the hand to grasp Jesus’ power (Mark 5:21 – 43)

Healing the woman and raising up Jairus’s daughter show that faith is required for anyone who comes to Jesus. πŸ‘‰ Read Mark 5:21 – 43 Q: Compare what Jairus said to Jesus (verse 23) and what the centurion said (Matt 8:8 – 11). What would the synagogue leader have said? Answers πŸ‘‰ ANS: “Please heal my daughter.” Or "Say a word, and then my daughter will be healed." He thought Jesus should come and lay His hands on his daughter to heal her. He is limiting Jesus’ power.  Q: She came up behind Him and touched His cloak, for she kept saying, “(                                         ).” (             ), the bleeding stopped, and she felt it.  Answer πŸ‘‰ ANS: “If only I touch His clothes, I will be healed.” At once She spent everything she had to no avail, which means she was hopeless. When she heard about Jesus and he had com...

08: Jesus’ power over storm and demons (Mark 4:35 – 5:20)

Demonstrating Jesus’ power might give a credential to Jesus’ message.  πŸ‘‰ Read Mark 4:35 – 5:20 When the disciples woke up Jesus desperately, Jesus calmed the wind and rebuked them, saying, “Why are you ( )? Do you still not have (             )?” They were overwhelmed by (           ) and said, “(                        )?” Answers πŸ‘‰ Cowardly, faith, fear, Who then is this If you don’t have faith, you will be full of fear before the storm of this world. When they realized Jesus was the Creator God, they feared Him. It is the Lord whom we need to fear, not the storm. What shows their lack of faith? Even though they were with the Creator God, they were frustrated, thinking they would be drowned. Is the Lord with you? Then, why do you fear? A man with an unclean spirit came out and met Jesus. Nothing could bind him. (    ...

07: The Parable of the Lamp and the Growing seed (Mark 4:21 – 34)

Jesus explains the nature of the Kingdom of God in parables: how the kingdom law is revealed and how it grows and matures. πŸ‘‰ Read Mark 4:21 - 34 Verses 21 – 25 give us three understandings of how the Kingdom of God is revealed. 1) Jesus reveals the kingdom's secret to the (             ), and God uses them as a lamp to shine the world (vv. 21 – 23). 2) However, they must heed to live out their knowledge of the Kingdom. Or, they will be (           ) even more (v24). 3) If they observe what they heard, they will be given more (             ) of the Kingdom (v25) Answers πŸ‘‰ Disciples, judged (measured), knowledge. A constitution and related laws are to be announced and enforced for a kingdom to be established and to stand. So is the Kingdom of God.  It is God’s will that He wants to proclaim the law through chosen people. If you are given the gospel, you are responsible for sh...

06: The Parable of the Sower: Hidden and Revealed (Mark 4:1 – 20)

Why don't all of them welcome the gospel? Why did some of them refuse or not comprehend? Jesus explains the reason in this chapter. πŸ‘‰ Read Mark 4:1 - 20 Toward the crowd, Jesus taught with a parable (1- 9). When alone, he explained the parable upon their request (10- 20). The seeds fell on (               ) were eaten by birds. You should keep the word you read or heard in your heart. Otherwise, (         ) will snatch the word. Answers πŸ‘‰ The roadside, Satan We should keep God’s word and sermon message in our hearts. Otherwise, we will forget it because someone diligently tries to take it away. The seed fell on (                   ) sprang up at once because the soil was (              ). They don’t seriously meditate on the message nor have it rooted in the heart. They just lightly respond to it according to their own f...

05: Broadening of ministry & not understanding family (Mark 3:7 – 35)

More people crowded to Jesus, and Jesus appointed twelve disciples. However, His family didn’t understand the gospel.  πŸ‘‰ Read Mark 3:7 - 35 Q: So many people from all around the world came to Jesus for they heard (                     ). But, they seemed not to know Jesus was (                   ). (7 – 12) Answers πŸ‘‰ ANS: what he had done, the Son of God. Verse 10 says that people are crowded and pressed toward Jesus. Why did Jesus order the spirits not to disclose His identity? Their knowing would distract the preaching of the gospel and the Kingdom of God. Q: What three things can you expect when you become Jesus' disciple?  (14) Answer πŸ‘‰ ANS: You will be with Jesus and sent to preach. Also, you will be given the authority to cast out demons. Q. When Pharisees said Jesus cast out demons by the power of Beelzebul, which is Satan, Jesus said th...

04: Resistance against the new and better way (Mark 2:18 – 3:6)

As soon as Jesus exposited what the gospel was, the Pharisees started refusing it. And this refusal will escalate to His death. πŸ‘‰ Read Mark 2:18 - 3:6 What was the reason that Jesus’ disciples didn’t need to fast?  Answers πŸ‘‰ ANS: Because the bridegroom (Jesus) was with them The purpose of fasting had been to restore their relationship with God or to get what they were praying for. Now, Jesus is already with them, and they have been reconciled with God in Jesus. Why do they need to fast? Jesus is the ultimate answer they have been praying for. Why do they fast to get the blessing?  New wine should be stored in new wineskins. If the new wine refers to the gospel of Jesus Christ, what would the old wineskins refer to in the story of v23-28? Answer πŸ‘‰ ANS: The law of Sabbath (24) The law of the sacred bread (26) Also, it might refer to the old religious system through which they got pardoned for their sins and approached God.  No form of religious system...

03: Conflict against the gospel for sinners (Mark 2:1 – 17)

The world seemed to welcome Jesus, but not all of them. At least some did not welcome the message of forgiveness of sins. πŸ‘‰ Read Mark 2:1 - 17 When they lowered the paralytic on a (              ), Jesus saw their (           ) and said, “(                                ).”  Answers πŸ‘‰ ANS: Stretcher, faith, Son, your sins are forgiven. What is their faith? They believed Jesus would heal him without rebuking them if they brought him by all means. They believed in Jesus’ power and generosity. The paralytic’s faith was also included in ‘their faith.’ It is improper to say that this man was forgiven by his friends’ faith. ‘Your sins are forgiven.’ In this case, his sin could be the cause of his sickness. Why did Jesus say to the paralytic, “your sins are forgiven,” instead of “be healed”? (10) Answer πŸ‘‰ ANS: It is to let...
